Wine and Food Tasting, Kotor Montenegro

Private Wine and Food Tasting in Kotor

Montenegro is a country with very delicious food. On the market, the farmers bring all kinds of food they produce.

The products include cheese, meat products like prosciutto, wines, and sometimes herbs they pick up in the mountains.

The most famous of all the meat products are Njeguš prosciutto. It is typical of the need to store it in a shady place. It is a dry-cured ham, served uncooked like Italian prosciutto. Traditionally is salted with sea salt, pressed, smoked, and dried in the cool mountain air, after which it is left to mature, so the whole process typically takes about a year. You can serve it with anything from cheese and bread to salads and pasta dishes.

The most famous wine in Montenegro is Vranac wine. It is from the ancient red grape. On the nose and the palate, Vranac displays fruity notes reminiscent of cherries and blackberries. Vranac goes with red meat, lamb roast, and cured meat.

Cheese from Pljevlja is a ubiquitous part of Montenegrin meals. It is white cheese made from unpasteurized cow milk. The cheese has a strong flavor and creamy texture. Its unique aromas come from the maturation process, which takes place in specially designed wooden barrels - the sliced cheese is salted, placed into wooden barrels, then immersed in brine. The older cheese contains more salt, but the younger is my favorite.
